Jessica Pelenski of Manasquan was rollerblading with her husband, Walter, in fall 2008 when she lost her balance and fell onto the street, landing hard on her right hip.
“It was a pretty nasty spill, and I had some bruising and soreness in my hip,” said Pelenski, 32.
She lived with the pain for some time, but while playing softball in spring 2009, she heard a popping sound as she reached down to field a grounder. She shrieked in discomfort. A cortisone shot failed to bring any relief, and Pelenski was wary of surgery.

Swing into Spring with Healthy Shoulders Written by: Christopher J. Spagnuola, M.D., P.A., of Seaview Orthopaedics
As the weather warms and we return to all our outdoor activities, shoulder problems occur quite frequently. Many people become active playing tennis, golf, baseball and softball. Unfortunately, too much of a good thing can lead to problems. Shoulder pain can start from any repetitive activity. Sometimes spring clean-up or gardening can be the cause of a shoulder problem.
The Problem: Commonly, people can injure a structure called the rotator cuff tendon. A tendon is tissue that attaches muscle to bone. The muscle pulls the tendon which pulls the bone which positions the limb where needed. The rotator cuff tendon is one of the main structures controlling the shoulder. This tendon can be torn off the bone during repetitive overhead activity.
